Sweetwater 2286 TT

I am about to purchase a Sweetwater 2286 TT- my first boat and using it on a smaller lake (7 mile). I have 4 kids ages 10-17 and figure on lot's of cruises and tubing with limited skiing (a few of the kids may try but I'm betting they will mostly want to tube). My two decisions I could use some help with:
1) Buy the Yamaha 115 or 150 hp? Dealer says 115 is adequate. Should I pay up and get 24 foot also over 22 foot?
2) Pricing- I was quoted $29K for a Sweetwater 2286 TT with a 115HP, sea ray steering, under deck lighting, soft touch seating, vinyl flooring- no trailer. Sound reasonable or can I get a better deal?

Welcome aboard Rosy. Sounds like a nice boat you are contemplating. The 115 would give good performance, but if you plan on the kids doing a lot of skiing or tubing you will probably do better with the 150. Does your boat have lifting strakes? They would greatly improve the performance with either motor.

I personally think you can do a lot better than that. It's average, doesn't seem like aggressive pricing. Look around for a dealer even in neighboring states who has somehitn to move. This is a good time to look b/c dealers have left over inventory. The economy has improved in recent years (or at least for some, or at least the illusion) and tritoons have taken off so prices are holding. Tritoons sales are exploding, while "planing hull" sales are still flat or on the decline in most cases.

Bass Pro Shops has a triple toon Suntracker with a Merc 150 listed for a few grand more than that. With dual axle trailer. You may be able to find a more premium boat too left over but it will take some looking. Try boattrader.com to get some ideas in your area.

I would advise you buy all the motor you can fit if the boat's limit is 150HP. You may outgrow that 115 quickly.

My humble advice: don't bite on that Sweetwater. We looked for 2 months but found a leftover boat and got a HUGE discount.

Hi, thanks for the information. The boat does have the performance package which includes lifting strakes. They say the 115 will do 37 and a 150 will do like 42mph. I haven't worked on the price at all with the dealer- they would be ordering it for Spring delivery

Hi there . I have a new G3 22 ft w a new version 115 Yamaha. Stainless prop. No strakes. Propped,correctly , you should run every bit of 35 -37 . For the extra money you spend for the 150 I'm not sure you are gonna see enough difference on speed to warrant the money. Plus, you think about difference in fuel consumption and the bang gets even smaller.
That 115 will pull those kids faster on a tube than they can ride it and what percentage of time you spend running WOT is small.

I think you can do better on the price... thats what they sell for here with a 150 on them and no trailer. Where are you located?

I dunno, not sure I'd buy the 115 thinking "it will do 37". Is it a 2013 or 2014 F115? The 2014 has better specs. Anyway you'd have to turn a 15P prop to 6300RPM (max RPM rated for the *2014* F115s) at 11% slip to get there. By no means impossible but you may find it difficult with the 2.15:1 gearing on that 115. I think they are playing the high side. It's a 1.8L engine. Yamaha tests with a Sweetwater 220 PE SL tritoon with performance pkg (strakes & sport center toon) with 15P aluminum prop on 2013 F115 show 27.9MPH @ 6000RPM. My guess is, add 5 MPH to that for quality well-matched SS prop - if you can turn a SS prop in 15P and keep the RPMs up. IMO I think speed is something that on this forum is regularly overreported.

35mph will NOT be seen with a 115hp motor. I would go with a 150hp motor, you will be much happier.

For comparison purposes:

We recently bought a Sweetwater 2286, but not the tri-toon model. We love the boat, and we only paid $20K out the door. It does have the Yamaha F-70 engine though, and top speed is 26 MPH. Fast enough for us I guess, but wish it had a few more ponies.

I have a 2014 22' with the 150. I tested both the 115 and 150 Yamaha. The 150 is the way to go.

I got my dealer down to 30k+tax etc for mine. Trailer was extra.

Easy to get price to climb when adding stuff.
Sweetwater 240DF ( 25' 8") 2015 115 Yam 4 Stroke 2 persons 18 gals 27 MPH Just had a Long shaft Kit install may do better worst won't know till spring.
The extra gas and additional $3550 wasn't worth it for me. Plus They state if you go with the 150hp you should get hydraulic steering. Also you may have to go with a better toll bar
If you know you will be doing lots of tubing skiing then maybe yes, if not then safe speeds may be better anyway and the savings can help balance overall pricing.
