1st Pontoon

#1 Post by gobeernet » Mon Feb 02, 2015 7:47 pm

Had a couple ~20' ski boats in the past. Sold everything a few years ago. Got the itch to get back on the water so I picked up a '99 22' Bennington with 115 Mercury last weekend. Its a fishing setup although I don't fish. I liked the motor, length and empty space on the front and back.

I'm sure I'll just enjoy for now. Once I gain some confidence in the platform I'll start tinkering. Prop is a bent up so that is high on the list. Next is a moderate radio upgrade, current radio is staticy and down to one speaker. I'd also like to move the seating around a bit. In the end, I'd like a ladder in the rear and front instead (or in addition) to each side.

Now to browse the forum to fuel the upgrade fire since its too cold to use it.
It floats, I'm happy.

Is there a write up of your tritoon conversion. I searched and didn't find one by you.
I'm jumping the gun, but its cold, so instead of using my toon, i'm dreaming about upgrades like a third toon. Seems to be a good bit of conflicting info about the conversions.

Viola, pick of todays maiden voyage.

Gear shift is mighty stiff. Is there anyway to lube these cables?

The motor ran out fairly well. If idling for a while, it will load up and die. PITA to start back. Now that I"ve had it out, I'll dig into it a bit. Check compression, new plugs. I'll look for a fuel filter.

Prop is dinged up with a good sized bend and small tear. Top speed is 22mpg gps. Once I get more confidence in the platform, I'll get a new one.

Got some water in the RH tube. I guess I can pull a plug and suck it out. Then pressurize with soapy water to find the leak. What pressure do I use?

wow, sorry for the massive image. I'll see if I can tame that down when I get back to a PC.

The toons have a significant water line. I used aliminex on the back half of the right side toon. Its leaving the aluminum a chalky white that doesn't look good. Any suggestions? I've read alot of polishing threads and that sounds like more than I'm up to. The toons have dings, etc. I'd like to get a "clean" and uniform finish. I'm not concerned with a polished finish. A dull aluminum finish would be fine with me. Can I sand the toons? What type and size of sander and what grit should I use?
