Hello from Northeast Texas

#1 Post by e5earley » Mon Feb 16, 2015 5:14 pm

Hello all. Been out of boating for about 15 years and looking to get back in the game. I've got a couple toons I'm looking at. Could use a little advice.

First one is an 1989 20 footer. Needs seats, console, and carpet. It also has 2 motors, the original 35hp mercury and a 120hp force that is currently installed. Assuming both run, would it be best to take advantage of the added horsepower of the Force or the better parts availability of the Mercury. I can get this one for between 2000.00 - 2500.00

Second one I'm looking at is a 1991 24 footer with a 70hp evinrude. The carpet, seats, and console have been replaced a couple years ago. This one will run about 3500.00

I'm capable of doing the resto work on the first one and do like the thought of making it my own. But the outboards on that one gives me some concern.

Thoughts?

Welcome neighbor---
One bit of advise I will give is to have a boat mechanic check out for you--
I got a mobil mechanic to go to the boat and he had a very detailed check list of things I would not have thought to check.
Cost me about a hundred dollars but I think well worth the money.
To help any others with advise to you, please put in how you will be using the boat and what "thing's" are important to you and your wife if that matters to you.

Planned use is taking the family cruising and doing some tubing with the kids. Occasionally fishing.

I had planned on checking out compression, spark, lower unit oil, prop, and looking for signs of overheating. May still have my local mechanic check it out. I'm assuming new impeller on any of them.

First Welcome to the forum!

Based on what you have posted:

Don't know your budget but in my opinion that would serve your needs better.

First....Welcome to the forum!

How large is the lake you will be boating on? A large windy lake will not be a good place for a 20 ft toon.
If you are planning on bringing the toon to Texoma for example the 24 ft would be a much better choice.
As said by others get it checked out before you buy.

Is that 1989 20' rated for 120hp? Seems like a lot of power for that boat. What is the pontoon diameter?

Oh, by the way, welcome board.

Appreciate all the advice. Texoma is not in our plans. More than likely Pat Mayse, Cypress, and Bob Sandlin.

Not sure about the rating. I'm supposed to look at it this weekend. I believe if I can't get the 20 footer for around 1500.00 I'll pass. Of course that would depend on everything checking out. I know I'm looking at at least 1500 more to recarpet and get new seats and console.

The more I type the better the 24 footer sounds.
