Hello New to boating & forum. Bilge pump on tri-toon?

#1 Post by Hi-C » Wed May 13, 2015 9:53 pm

New member. New to boating. Have a Sylvan 27' tri-toon with 150 Mercury engine. Joined for learning about boating, especially a pontoon boat. Boating on the Barnegat Bay in NJ.

Question: This tri-toon boat has an electric bilge switch. Since I have no manual, why a bilge pump for a trii-toon :?: Would anyone know when and how to use and maintain it :?: Thanks.

Does the switch do anything, and can you hear a pump running?

If you have a middle toon ski locker, it might be for a pump down there.

Many dash panels on boats have switches that are not applicable--used on different types of boats.

Welcome. Most likely you have a pump below your ski locker in your center tube.

Absolutely right. On my Tritoon, the bilge bump is in the rear of the ski locker. Makes it nice and easy to get rid of the water collected from life jackets, kneeboarding etc..

This is question I've had as well. I know I have a pump in the ski locker but I was told by the dealer that it is automatic and not run by any of the switches? Can anyone elaborate on that? I've had to have it replaced once.

The pumps can be set up to be automatic,,, and usually if you want to turn it on at the helm there is a manual override,,,cuz your the Captain and if you wanna pump it out then you can !!,,, Otherwise it waits untill it gets to a certain depth then pumps

First, welcome!

My boat's ski locker has a bilge, located in a well in the aft end of the locker. It is automatic, as long as the battery is switched on. There's also a dash switch for manual operation if the water level is not high enough to trip the float switch.

I've never had to maintain or replace a bilge. Of all the pumps on various boats I've owned, the bilge has been the most reliable.

If I don't have a ski locker, why is there a bilge pump in the center pontoon of a tri-toon?

Oh, great. I'll have to hope those 4 fresh water wash down pumps and two maserators counted for something!
