New to tooning

#1 Post by KE4UVV » Sun Oct 10, 2010 10:22 pm

Hi,

Getting ready to order a new toon.

Hoping to get a 22 or 25ft Tritoon with 250 4 stroke. I'm looking at the Bennington ESP or Premiere PTX.

My question is If you load a tritoon with 8-10 adults would you go faster with a 22ft or 25ft boat. I'm thinking with that much weight I will be better off with the 25ft because it will have more running surface to lift the toons out of the water.

I don't know about performance wise but if your going to be carrying 8-10 adults regularly the 25 would be better for comfort/breathing room.
I know we love our 22 foot Premier PTX and we have only had 4 adults and 2 children on it so far, during the summer we had the same 22 foot Premier floor plan but in a 2 tube model and usually had 4-8 adults and 2-4 kids with the larger loads sometimes it seemed a little crowded.

I have a 25' brand new tritoon with a Honda 150. See my performance below 32mph by myself, 25mph loaded. For me it is all about how many people you want take on the boat...on a saturday afternoon. I am allowed 16 people.

If you know you will only want 8-12 people, than a 22' will fly like accross the lake at 50MPH plus I am sure with a 250. Somedays I wish I had the 250, other days I am glad when it is only a 150 (fuel consumption). Right now I burn 10 gph and get 2-3mpg at 4500-6000RPM. A 250 will burn 15-20GPH at that same RPM, and will get you probably 1.5-2mpg. (depending on how fast/hard you run your boat). If you are just putting around the lake at 3000 RPM you will get much better performance that I am getting because you don't have to run wide open to get 25mph like I do.

Good luck, send pictures if you pull the trigger!

Thanks for the help.

I was leaning toward the 22ft because about 80 % of the time we will have 2 children and 6 adults on deck. The other 20% of the time I will have at least 8 adults and 2 children. On a rare occasion we may have 10 adults.

It was so crowded on my old 19 ft bow rider boat. I always had 6 adults and two children and we were packed and could hardly move around. Then you add 3 towel bags, food baskets, rafts, tubes, and three coolers it was a mess.

The 25ft model is only $700 more dollars so initial cost is not an issue but I hate to give up speed or worse MPG.

Get the 25'. The speed and gas between the two would not vary much if it had the same horsepower engine. 10 persons on a 22' gets really crowded when you add all the beer coolers. :lol3

Welcome

If you are routinely carrying 6 to 10 people I would go with the 25'. I would just try to make of the diff in speed between the two by hp. You an your passengers will be much more happy. Both models you mentioned already have the lifting strakes factored in and are a good choice.

We have a 25' Premier Escapade with the 30" PTX. I say go with the 25, even though we usually have 4 adults and maybe a kid or two we are really glad we went with the 25 footer. The extra room for storage, people capacity etc is well worth the extra cost of the 25 over the 22. Of course, we do lose a little seating room having the captains chairs up front, but boy are those seat great and it's the seats people sit in most.

the size motor and size PTX depends on what you want to do, if you want to ski, zip across the lake, etc I would go with at least 200hp and more if you can afford it. Note: the premier guys recommended the 30" PTX if your motor was less than 200hp, over 200 they recommend the 36. I was right in the middle and since we already were spending more than we wanted we went with the 30". Our lake is small and we mainly fish and slow cruise so the 36" and it's larger fuel tank wasn't too big of a deal.

Note: with 9 large guys on the boat during a recent demo we only got the boat to 23 mph, but we do run at 5500' elevation so we lose power to altitude. yesterday with just me and a full tank I ran 33. I was watching my fuel burn yesterday and at WOT I burn 20gph, back thing down to 3500 to 4k rpm (I think it was) I was burning 5.1-5.5 gph and was running low to mid 20s for speed.

Go the 25 ft. you won't be sorry. Just because you have 200 horses doesn't mean you have to run them all wide open. Just nice to have when/if you need or want them.

I finally did it. I went with the 2011 Premier 250 Sunsation LTD with 36in PTX, DL seating, and Mercury Verado 250 XL.
