Am I required to have fence gates?

Hello fellow toonies, I recently rebuilt a Sweetwater 2424XL '97 and flipped the rails around backwards to lower my fence height at the bow (just 11" now.) I left off corner starboard side tall rear fence for stern access and a ladder. I put my gates back on and they are getting in my way. Here in Virginia, am I required to have fence gate or can I take them off for good?

Not required, I ran without mine for 10 years when I had the TM mounted up there, your front fence, like mine, you will trip and fall over it anyway it so low
