Re: Al the Mirthmaker (Mark III)
haven't seen a update in a while, hows it coming? I got my engine set in today, the fork truck I usually borrow wasn't available, so I loaded the engine into the back of the truck, and trailered it to a towing comp, with a fork truck. but its in anyway, need a shoe horn. JT

And do you now have the telltale marks of valve cover bolts permanently indented into your forehead?pond tuuunes wrote:haven't seen a update in a while, hows it coming? I just climbed out of the metal-dust and shaving covered pit that once was my garage. Things are finally moving again. Update today or tomorrow.
BTW, that's a real purty lookin' power plant you got there

Thinking of putting your hand down here? Go ahead, I dare you.
One of my idiotic, inebriated friends actually did. A nice mix of fiberglass dust and aluminum shavings

Re: Al the Mirthmaker (Mark III)
OK I am back a bit late-the last six weeks being a whirlwind of rescuing my injured mother from Florida via Amtrak, loss of a friend, loss of a car, almost loss of a job (paper mill just cut 30% of workforce), paper mill annual outage (246 hours worked in 21 days). Didn’t get much done, so a ways behind. On the positive side, the lake just thawed so I am not missing out on much good swimming.
Here’s the update:
Several doghouse shots. It is now done and installed (and beerproof and drunkproof). I painted the inside with modern sound deadening paint. This is the type of stuff that the ‘homies’ use so that they don’t shake their car to pieces when they are bumping the bass. Interesting goop. About 13#/gallon. Almost like concrete mixed with some sort of rubber? I could have troweled it on it is so thick. I ended up slathering 3 fairly thick coats (about 8#) on and it still doesn’t look like it has much thickness. It made a HUGE difference in the resonance of the structure when I wacked it with a mallet, however. I think it will cut motor noise much better than the old carpet that I tore out. Doghouse ended up weighing about 50lbs.
Railing and door modifications are finally done. The brazing, polishing and skinning took a lot of work but basically went well--so well in fact that the new brazed areas are much shinier than the rest of the rails (for some reason the shiny spots look darker in many of the shots that I took). So either they are going to have to dull up with some weathering or I have a big rail polishing job to do next winter. Going to install most hardware in the garage and keep the bulk of the metal mess off the boat. Latches, hinges, braces, EasyFenders!, pike pole holder, nav lights, cam cleats (to help stow lines). Rails should get installed sometime within the week.
Lots of small details to finish up. Sea trials maybe two weeks from now….or longer. It’s been almost a year. Obviously I’m in no hurry…ahem.
