putting snapps on new cover,,, tight or loose?

#1 Post by grouser » Sun Jul 26, 2015 8:15 pm

When installing the snaps on a new cover do you put the snaps where the canvas is tight ,,or leave it a bit loose in anticipation of the material shrinking???

My factory install, they're all tight. No shrinkage I can see, in 4 seasons.

Use a "Q-tip" and apply just a little dab for the mating to snap/unsnap easily. I haven't had any stains bleeding thru, then again, it's just a "dab" that's applied  .

Someone on this site earlier in the year suggested the use of Chapstick on the snaps. Worked perfect for me as the Chapstick fit perfectly over the snap making it an easy project with no mess.

No longer using snaps because I grew to hate 'em (along with zippers) :x

Back when I had a topper made for my cuddie, the seamstress asked me where I wanted the strong snaps to go. HUH? Turns out that you can get 'stiff' or 'weak' snaps that unsnap a bit easier. She suggested putting the stiff ones on the leading edge (into the wind) of all my canvas and weaker ones elsewhere.
I also ended up buying a small 'snap tool' to undo the tough ones without beating up my canvas.

Never knew there were different types of snaps. And the "tool" really saves on the canvas !!!. If your not using snaps or zippers,,,what are you using???? shoelaces?? LOL

2 doors and 7 windows (2 of 'em are used school bus windows, complete with complimentary candy). I can have the wind just a-whistling through that shack in about 15 seconds and close it up just as fast. Love it!
