I"m replacing the carpet on my pontoon boat again, and was wondering if covering the plywood with fiberglass, instead of the carpet, or maybe for a base under new carpet would be a good idea. Has anyone done this or have any thoughts on it?
Thanks,
Steve

Re: Fiberglassing the deck
Several different ways of thinking on the subject. Personally I wouldn't and here is why. I purchased my Pontoon from the Original owners when it was over 20 years old and they have left it uncovered year round and it had only developed one small soft spot in those 20+ years. 20 years out of 3/4 marine ply exposed to rain in the summer and snow in the winter is a pretty good service life IMO. Fiberglass only on the top side would only seal one side and possibly trap moisture under it which could be bad, doing both sides would be a pain in the butt and expensive. Your more than likely going to want to replace the carpet LONG before the wood goes bad IF you find REAL Marine Grade plywood.
