1989 Grumman Pontiki build (questions about motor sizing)

#1 Post by javagator » Tue Dec 20, 2016 7:56 am

Well here is my build so far, its a 1989 Grumman 24' pontoon that I stripped, redecked and built a bar on it with a helm. Two seats up front, custom bar stools (yet to be built out of 2x4's) and two storage containers in the back. I also plan on adding a rope railing. My hope is that it doesn't sink when I put her in the water!

Here is the full build album

I'm trying to stay under a budget of $10k on this build and have so far spent about $2,100 on the project. This leaves me around $7-8k for motor and controls. Any recommendations on motor sizes? I'd like it to get to maybe 18-20mph so that trips to the sandbar don't take all afternoon.

Thanks all!

PS... I've been unsuccessful in attaching photos or using the [url] tags apparently.

Great idea! I would suggest a 50 hp min. 75 would be better, that should be pretty light.

Craig is right . I had a 70 Suzuki on my boat before the rebuild and it did about that speed.

I would go with the larger motor. I have NEVER heard anyone say "Man I have too big of a motor"

That is an awesome rebuild.

Get as much motor as budget will allow. Like others have said you will never hear someone say "man I wish I had gotten a smaller motor"

I love how you attached the steering wheel to the back of the bar!!!

Do you have the capacity plate? I am guessing the boat is not rated for anything above 115hp. The boat was probably designed for something more like 75hp or 90hp.

That is one sweet looking bar.
If I was still a drinking man, I could spend a lot of time bending my elbow there.

We put a 90 on our 20 ft 91 Grumman when we redid it and wish we went a little bigger, we are getting 22 with two or three on board and 18 20 MPH with a full load

Herb is your Grumman a pontoon or tritoon? I have a 98 tritoon 20 footer that came with a 50 hp which was giving me 19 to 20. Put the 90 hp merc. on and now getting 28 gps with me and the captain and the 108 lb big boy shepherd. Was really pleased with the difference
