Oars who has em.

#1 Post by curtiscapk » Wed Jan 21, 2009 8:33 am

So I have looked and looked for a "law" requiring you to have an oar on my toon and can't find one. I looked all through the rules and regs for Missouri and can't find a mention. So do any of you keep an oar on your toon and with a 24 footer would it do any good any way?

Just trying to prepare for the summer.

Thanks,
Craig and Paula

If im not mistaking, Tennessee requires that you have one. I think! Anyway, I have one on board, just incase. It was given to me when I had my bass boat, so I put it on my toon when I traded. Wish I could help more.

I know everyone tells me its a reg but I can't find it.

Thanks for your input. I be getting one just in case but want to see if it is actually a reg and I'm missing it.

I keep 2 on both boats. The Starcraft because you COULD row it (somewhat) and 2 for the dinghy on the Party Cruiser. Technically it's required in MD, but DNR cops never ask for them.

I keep two folding paddles stored in the pop up change room.
They are required by our laws.
Had to use them two years ago when a critter chewed my Battery cables underneath and we had to paddle the boat over to the ramp.
Only a few hundred yards as the boat was in a Marina slip.

You are right in that the Missouri regulations do not require them. That being said, I have two for the deckboat, just in case. The paddles that I have also have a "hook" at the opposite end that is good to retrieve floating objects such as fenders or hats.

If you have them, you'll never use them. You don't have them, eventually you'll wish that you did.

I have a pair on mine....but when I needed them I didn't use them, I just tied ropes around my kids life jackets and said if you swim fast we can get back quicker and then it will all be over with. For some reason they got mad at me....kids have it to easy nowadays! The wife said I was being mean...I asked her if she wanted to help them, she said if I asked her that again me and my right hand would be closer friends like we were in Middle school...hahaha.
Yes I do have a pair, I think in GA in is required that you have them on your boat.

I never seen where they would do any good on a pontoon boat they will move at 5 mph in a mild wind, but I have the trolling motor for that , it will pull me at 4 mph if I not going into a wind.

So far I haven't been checked but I hope they will accept the TM is better than oars on our big boats

I always thought it was just kind of stupid on my chain of lakes to even attempt to row the toon so I never kept one on board...then the toon died once in the middle of a busy set of channel bouys! :x There I was hanging over the back of the toon looking at the motor....but it didn't stop 1/2 the asshole boaters from buzzing within feet of us and rocking us almost into the drink! :ak47 I now carry a small paddle so I can at least move the toon a few feet if needed. I also gave in and got myself a pole for instances when my shipmates are all old...or to drunk to help me dick....or both. :tofunny

I thought they were required in KY but it doesn't look Like it!

rowing a pontoon with an oar is kinda like chasing and ant up an elephants butt!
