Does anyone use mooring whips on their toon?

#1 Post by exospex » Mon May 04, 2009 11:48 am

They seem pretty expensive for what they are. The water level in our lake seems to change a lot. It's difficult to keep the fenders in a spot where they work well. The wind is out of the NW most of the time, which keeps our boat off the fenders, and the lines tight. When the wind changes around it seems like there is a storm coming, and that is when I need the boat away from the dock even more. I got really bad dock rash last year from this. I was pissed, but what are you going to do.....

Anyone have good luck with them?

On Tenkiller here there is a big dock on the main lake. It gets lots of wind, wave and wake action. They have them on 2 sides, a toon on one side and a big alumacraft fishing boat on other. They use the whips and have had them as long as I can remember and we have been here 20 years. So I would say they work well for the cost.

I saw those as well Herb. I didn't like the idea of tying a hard tube between the dock and the boat. I am open to suggestions though. Has anyone here used those adjustable standoffs?

I knew we had some people build their own and used it when rafting to keep the toons separated

I have been using tires attached to the dock and cover them with canvas. Makes a pretty neat looking install and works well. The canvas will last 2 or 3 years, once its starts to wear some and get thin the outline of the tires can be seen. Bought some new canvas at northern tool 8x25 and plan to double it so it will extend 4 ft from the top of the dock to just below the water, just right for my dock. Been looking at the whips and hold aways for a while but think I will just get a lift if I build a house on the lot. Got several people on the lake that use the whips but never have asked them how well they work. I used stainless steel screws with fender washer to attach the tires and roofing nails to attach the canvas to the pilings and top of the dock. On my old toon to keep the cover down I used some of those caps that fit coke bottles filled with sand that overtons sell. Might work on the fenders to hold them pumb also, worth a try...........
