Gas Gauge Problems

Any helpful hints on how I can fix my gas gauge that's not working and how I trouble shoot it? It's on my 17 foot alum fishing boat. I think it's a flote system...not sure...?

I always check for corosion on the nuts on the back of the gage first. then using leads, I check for broken wires with a continuity meter. If those tests pass, I replace the sender. Last resort is to replace the gage.

Guage has a power wire, ground wire and tank sender wire. Check for power when the ignition is on and the ground to make sure it's good. Next, go to the tank and you'll find a ground and sender wire. Take the sender wire (usually has a female quick connect while the ground is a ring terminal) and remove it, noting the position of the fuel guage (full, empty, ect.). Unplugging the sender wire makes the guage read empty, grounding the wire makes the tank go to full. While you're back there, make sure the tank's groud wire has a good ground connection.

It's very common for Tempo units to fall apart in the tank, the float arm rivet breaks off or rust prevents the float from moving.

Yea i hate corosoin on my nuts too LOL

If you can get to the float assembly lift it out and have sombody watch the gauge (if you cant see it) and move the float up and down and see if the gauge follows it... (give the needle time to catch up) if it reads right you proly need a new float
