Double Toon w Strakes

#1 Post by Cuuhl » Mon Sep 14, 2015 6:33 pm

Greetings! First time poster here. I'm in the market for my first toon in 10+ years..... this ain't your grandpa's boat anymore!! We're cruisers, but occasionally need to get from point A to B quickly. I'm looking at 22' with a rear swim platform, because my slip is 20' long with an 18" overhang. Double-toon with strakes and 115-150 HP, for straight-line speed and to keep it affordable.

I'm dizzy from looking at all the brands/models over the past few weeks, so am asking for some advice. What are very good (not the absolute best, due to pricing) brands to look at that offer double-toons with strakes standard or as an option? Thanks for your help!

Are you looking used or new? And, if I may ask... why not a tri toon? Not that much more money for a tri. But there are some nice performance twins out there, but they don't plane out like a tri will. Where do you boat at? Depending on the water, that can justify a tri over a twin, as well.
Oh ya! Welcome to the forum! Lots of super folks here that can help you out.

Looking new. I priced Suntracker 22' double w Merc 115 CT, vs tri-toon w same and it's roughly $6K more, considering all the associated expenses. $26K > $31K. We don't need the ability for tight turning, just straight-line speed occasionally. We'll be on Lake Hamilton in Hot Springs AR. It can get a little choppy on the weekends, but not extreme. I'm thinking we would be fine with a double? Thanks for the input!

Should have mentioned.... a Suntracker double w strakes is not available. I've seen a couple of brands that offer doubles with strakes, and so went to the Forum for help.

I am in kinda the same situation as i love my boat but want more speed, my lift and trailer is set up for two tubes and i have a low
bridge to go under to get to the lake and may be impossible to get out in the spring with the added height of a tritoon.
My neighbor just bought a Harris 22 cruiser with a 150 two toons, no strakles and he tops out at 34 mph. I am thinking with strakes and under sheeting you can gain 4-5 mph over that.
I am curious on how the two toon boat with strakes will handle compared to one without strakes.

straked twin tubes are the fastest setup with X amount of HP, and perform great in a straight line with a light load. Neighbor at the lake has a twin tube with strakes and the old weak 1.7L Merc 115 fourstroke and with just 2 people runs 35-36mph GPS. An unstraked 115 would only run 26-28 and a Tritoon with a 115 (under powered) would turn 32-33. Added weight drags down the speed quicker on any twin tube VS tritoon though and I'd be surprised if a 115hp straked twin tube would even plain with 6 people or more leaving you at displacement speed.

I would look at test driving a Sylvan with the RPT tubes. They are a larger diameter tube with a v hull bottom. So far I haven't had any issues getting on plane due to the extra buoyancy.

You can also search for a used Sun Tracker with the NV performance package. I believe 2010 was the last year they built them.

Good info, thanks! I'll look into the Sylvan for sure. Seems to be a high mid-range brand. Not all mftrs have double toon w strakes from what I'm seeing, which is why I'm asking for help, from those who own or have test- driven one. All input appreciated!

I can vouch for the NV package on the Trackers. Had one. 21 ft w 90 horses. That bastard would fly!!!! Got rid of it due to the piece of shit Merc motor it had. That boat surprised a lot of other boats when they realized it only had a 90 for a motor!
