Tachometer settings

Yesterday I was moving my trolling motor batteries from the front to the storage under the console and notice the tach had a dial on the back.

The settings are 8cyl 4p, 6 cyl 3p, 4cyl 3p, 6p and 3p. From the factory it was set at 6cyl 3p. Due to the 4cycl 115 that's on my boat, shouldn't this be set on 4cyl 3p?

Probably. You may be able to find a manual for the tach on line which may show you the correct setting. I located the manual and settings for my Faria tach on line.

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately I didn't bother to see what brand the tach is. When I get back to the storage, I'll take a look.

Since the tach was set on 6cyl 3p and not 4cycl 3P, what the display difference would be in the event it was on the wrong setting. Both settings are 3 pulse and I don't have enough knowledge to understand the difference between the 4/6 cylinder. Does anyone have any idea, other than 2 more cylinders?

Does the tach have any other functions? I really can't see any reason other than sometimes manf just do strange stuff for no good reason.

I took a pic after I moved the dial to 4C 3p was initially set at the 6C 3P setting. I did not have a chance to put it in the water as the wind was gusting up to 30mph.



I'll have to take another look and see if there any additional settings.

Tach settings make a big difference in RPM readings. I had my boat for 2 years and my dealership couldn't figure out why we couldnt get it propped right. They tested it numerous times at the shop and even sent the service manager with me to the lake to test it and try different props. However it was never as fast as they said it should be. Well by the 3rd year I had resolved to just be satisfied with my slow boat until I was surfing the net and found the faria tach info. After talking to my dealerships mechanic and him arguing with me that I was wrong I went ahead and adjusted the tach to what the information on the faria site told me to do for my engine. Well low and behold I was running at 4500 rpm instead of the 6000rpm WOT that I am supposed to be at. Thus why we could never get the speed or propping right.

For sure! That throws everything right out the window! I used to hook up an old dwell tach/timing light to read the pulse's when I was in doubt. Haven't done it in a long time, but all I had to do was put the power cables on the pos/neg battery posts, set the tach to 2/4/6 or 8 and slip the inductive pick up around the #1 spark plug wire to get the pulse and correct RPM's. Might work on the newer motors.
