Removing gates?

#1 Post by jediger » Wed May 11, 2016 1:38 pm

I have two hinged back gates that open onto my swim platform which keep losing hardware and a front trolling motor gate that rattles. Contemplating the wisdom of just removing them entirely.

Pros: free access to the back platform with no obstacles to trip over and no more worrying about lost latch hardware.
Easier access to catch and release fish off the bow.
Don't have to worry about the gate when raising and lowering the trolling motor.
One less surface for the wind to catch

Cons: would obviously leave an opening when the boat is covered since there would be no gate.
no front gate could create a wind tunnel effect at speed that would blow everything around on board.
safety?

Anyone done this and have some real world experience to counter my armchair surmisings?

When the grand kids are on shore, I prefer to run with the gates open in the summer. I like watching the waves I'm going into and I always have the gate open when putting them on the trailer. I see no reason not to. Can you just block them open? I have a block coming for the new boat, I'll take a pic of it when it gets here, if you want...

There is replacement hardware for gates at Overtons. Also, if your losing hardware because the screws come apart why don't you try Loctite?
