had a friend of ours come over yesterday ,he's a mechanic for Honda. brought his test gear and looked all over it . its either I bought a dud switch, or the wire harness that runs from the switch to the motor is bad. the switch is getting juice, but the juice isnt getting to the solenoid.

Another idea....

Maybe your motor thinks/senses it is in gear? The shift linkage could be out of alignment or worn and the motor "thinks" it is gear. I have heard of this before.

Just spit balling at this point.

You never answered if you had power coming out of the ignition switch when in the start position, this is a very simple system, it goes from the ignition switch to the neutral safety switch, so first you need to check it at the switch, if it has power out of the switch, then next check it at the neutral safety switch, you said you bypassed the neutral safety switch, how did you bypass it?

Im sorry for the confusion, no power coming from the switch to the solenoid... I meant we bypassed the safety switch to make sure the power wasnt stopping there (from the solenoid pole on key switch) ... was just ruling that out to make sure... but no, no power is coming from the key switch to solenoid.

My money was on either the inline fuse(the early loop charged 50's had this prob) or the engine tilt switch--not sure that motor has it. Mercs used to and I've seen folks try to start motor with engine tilted up and it wouldn't start. Good luck....

Did you solve the problem? My B-I-L is having exactly the same problem. Replaced solenoid and ignition switch but still no power from the switch though switch is receiving power. I suggested that the new switch might possibly be bad and to test it. Older Evinrude 150 and OMC controls.

I never did...sold the boat just last week..only thing we figured out was the cable that goes from the motor to the switch was bad.
