New Mercury 115 for 21' Lowe- CT beneficial or not?

#1 Post by billb1981 » Mon Jun 15, 2020 9:57 am

Hey all-

I made a post earlier about a new motor if it's worth it, and while there was some helpful tips I wanted to see if I could a little more specific on this and make sure I'm not crazy.

We have a 2015 Lowe SF214, with a Mercury 60 HP ELPT Bigfoot (CT). The boat two logs and has lifting strakes.

We've decided to max it out with a 115, so I've been calling around getting some prices. Being in Kansas, you don't always get a lot of Marinas but I've found a couple of options and one guy who has been very helpful, but here's where I scratch my head.

He wants to order me a 2020 Mercury ELPT 115HP 4 stroke. He mentioned that the Command thrust (bigger gear ratio) is not the best choice for my boat, (21 foot.) He seems to think the standard gearbox would be better for us. The difference in price is about $400, so it's not a cost issue for me but rather for my particular boat is he right, or would the CT be the better option?

I'd say shop online for pontoons and see how many you find equipped with a Merc that DON'T have CT.

I watched that actually, and it's helpful, it's really steering me to the CT. I don't see the negatives about it really, not sure why he's stuck on it, said he's sold some CTs and they come back disappointed. He said he'd sell me either one. I like the Pro XS but think I would be happy with the CT for sure.

It's a tough spot when the question is if you'll be more happy with one or the other, but not unhappy with either.

Check out some of the numbers here and start to get giddy....

Oh I've started. :) Propping it will be a whole other confusing mess for me. Only thing I know is my lake has a good amount of stumps and while I try to avoid them, I do a lot of fishing and I'm in and out of them a lot, (I have a trolling motor but not always bringing it out with). So wondering if one prop handles the little stick ups better than the other if you drift over it.
