Ok, I see where you are going!
Ya, that would be cool to be able to select say 4 of 50 dir's and just have songs out of those play randomly, but ya, i dont think thats possible.

It looks like, and im not positive, that the random function on this Alpine allows 2 types of random functions. One will random the whole stick. The other will allows random in a specific dir.

Im still abit confused on something else though.
On my Alpine head, i have a harness that powers 4 speakers. Plus n minus for front left n right and plus n minus for back left n right. So 8 wires.

Ok, thats all good.

Also on the back, there are 2 RCA jacks. L and R.

Thats all good and thats how its setup right now.

Ok...lets try and add an amp into the picture!

When i look at most 4 channel amps, cause im guessing thats what i want, ie 2 front and 2 rear, they have the place for the 4 speakers on one side of the amp, just like the harness. Thats all good.

BUT, on the input RCA side of the amp, there are 4 jacks.? Usually that say channel 1, 2, 3, 4.

Soo... how do i run the 2 RCA jacks on the head, into 4 input RCA jacks on the amp? :paranoid
How do i plug these fricken things together when there are 2 jacks on one and 4 on the other? :rofl

PS, yes i can be an idiot sometimes.. :alright

my full range amp is a 4 channel and my sub is a 2 channel. just use a set of RCA "Y" connectors. they sell em at wally world. i think they're even made in china :drink

i have dual RCA jacks on my pioneer. 1 set for full/mids and 1 set for rear/subs

Full Mid l R------Y======= RL amp input 1
l L------Y======= RL amp input 2

Head Unit l
l R--------------R ch Sub
Rear Sub l L-------------- L ch sub

bamby........you need an mp3 player and I dont mean an Ipod......hate them and will never buy one. Check out ebay, last year I bought a 30 Gig Zune for no more than $60, I've got about 15Gig of anything anyone wats to hear and some that no one wants to hear. I could let it play for days and not hear the same song twice. Plugs right into an aux jack.

I agree with others Bamby, you need an MP3 player. You can do what you are wanting with one of those fairly easily. I on the other hand, do love my ipod. I have the 16gig nano, and I absolutely love how small it is, but I can still have almost all of my music on it. I orig. bought it for when I workout/run, but it's a added bonus for the toon.

Yes, an MP3 player has many advantages over an IPOD.
Mostly the price and the ability to just plug it into a computer and view it as a harddrive. That way you can create your own dir's and just drag n drop files onto it unlike anything APPLE, where you have to use that fricken ITUNES application. :devillol

Sounds as if I need to learn something about MP3's and probably end up acquiring one. Thanks for the :thumbsup on them. I sometimes feel so far behind the times these day's back when I was younger I used to be able to keep up with the latest and greatest but then things didn't evolve so fast back then ether.
