We bought a 1985 Lowe Sunbird that has NEVER been covered in its life. Seats are very, very torn & weathered. We are wanting to replce the seats but after seeing the price of them I looking more at recovering the old seats. ( I did break down & buy 2 new camo seats for the fishing seats though, couldn't resist) Anyways, I was wondering if anyone had any input on where to get the vinyl & how hard this might turn our to be? Thanks!

Re: Recovering Seats
I got a price on recovering an it was about the same as new ones. Plus if you recover an there is any existing wood it could cause problems down the road. Wouldn't hurt to get an estimate but the upholstery and canvas guys are not cheap.

Re: Recovering Seats
Not an easy task to do it yourself can be done though also if any wood needs replaced then a little tougher. Your better off to buy new plastic seats then to recover They can be found at a decent price and if they cost to much then just do a seat or two at a time

Re: Recovering Seats
I'm gessing but an 1985 should have wood frames on the seats and that should also be replaced to save problems in a few months from now. Also you will need a extra heavy duty sewing machine to sew the covers. It's not a job for someone who is not trained, if you want it to look better than a homemade job. The new furniture will have plastic bases, fitting seat covers, and look good. The dollars you save doing it yourself will be spent re-doing it later. If the cost is too much do a couple of seats at a time until they all get replaced.

Re: Recovering Seats
Here is the vinyl I used when I got my seats reupholstered. It is more stain resistant and easier to clean than the original vinyl.

My boat is a 1996 Grumman. I was going to replace the seats, but found the wood to still be in great shape.

Check Ebay for the material. Make sure it is marine grade.

Re: Recovering Seats
Thanks everyone! I think you are all right about just doing a couple at a time. After alot of research I'm not so sure I am ready to devote that kind of time or energy into trying this on my own!
