uping hp instead of repower
After doing some research i can find no aftermarket for an outboard. I also noticed the specs on say a 115 and a 125 or 150 and 175 are the same. So my question is what makes them different. Can parts be changed on a 150 to make it a 175. Is there any aftermarket companies out there. I am a auto mechanic and do aftermarket on cars allot. I have turned wrenches at a marina before as well years ago and have never thought about this till now. Just a sparked curiosity.

On the smaller and older Johnsons/Evinrudes it is just a matter of installing a bigger carb.
ie; 20 to 25hp

I can tell you now that you are not the only person to think this way. I hate to tell you this but by buying all the parts that are different it would be cheaper to just buy the 175. A lot of people say it's just carb's but its down in the lower unit in the gears also. They don't give you enough specs to figure out where they picked up 25 to 50 more horses. They cost more cause they cost more, for the extra H.P. bigger stronger and the specs read the same. Go figure, you can increase the h.p. just like a car bore, stroke,cams,valves. If you want more h.p. my advice is to buy it the first time.

Thats pretty much sums it up. it would definately be cheaper to find a bigger engine than to pay all the labor needed to swap things around plus finding/buying the parts. If we are talking Merc 2.5L 150 vs 2.5L 175 then you've got to change the cylinder block, heads and carbs(ecm if its an EFI) as well as swapping gear ratio from 2:1 to 1.87:1 ...none of which are cheap. They do share all fuel injection parts excepting the ECM's, crank, rods, and pistons are the same, as well as the electrical/ignition.

I asked almost this vary same question about 6-8 months ago. I was also told the 90 & 115 hp. Merc's were the same. After extensive research, they are not, and yes, it would be cheaper to just buy the bigger engine. I too to a LOT of customizing with aftermaket parts on cars, and therefore thought it would be something I could handle. Turns out, the market for my boat motor is the same for my V8 Grand Prix motor. Non-Existant.
You'd be better off playing with props, and trying to get the boat to sit higher in the water than you would be with tinkering with the outboartd. Now an inboard would be a different story.
