tilt and trim to gain speed

#1 Post by vino1972 » Tue Jun 01, 2010 4:15 pm

I am a first year pontoon owner with a 20 ft Misty Harbor w 2 stroke 90 hp mercury on it. I was on the lake this past weekend and I notice with 4 people on board I was going 26 with 4900 rpm. Is this about right? I am not certain about the prop but I think the first # is 14. Also I read that you can adjust the tilt and that will increase your speed. How does that work, specifically if you tilt it down will it increase or do you need to tilt it up to increase? Thanks for your help.

It's a try it and see thing on any boat. Just tip it up a bump on the switch at a time and watch your tach and speed. Go in each direction till you find the sweet spot where your getting the best speed at the same or slightly higher RPM's. It will also vary depending on the load, you have to play with it. Also depends on how many folks up front or in the back, thats why it's adjustable. Have fun and enjoy your boat! :nana

Sort of like shifting gears in a car. All the way down at start equal to 1st gear giving more prop bite as you gain speed trimming cuts down on the drag so the speed is increased. As mentioned watch the tach an speedo.
