Rocks and pontoons

#1 Post by Cobra427cable » Tue Jun 08, 2010 6:40 am

He this may be a dumb question but it's worth asking anyway. One of our favorite camping spots on Kaw lake has a rocky waterfront and usually leave our boat in the water all weekend while we camp so I anchor it in the back and up front and try to keep it a few feet from the shore so it won't hit the front of the pontoons. Well, this usually works so so until this last weekend when we had some stong winds blow through in the middle of the night and that next morning I noticed the ropes were a bit slack and judging by the marks all over the rocks, it had been banging into the rocks all night. It looks like I can lightly file down the damage to the knive edge of the toons but I just wondered what everyone else does in this situation. I've noticed some of the v-hull boats use a old tire and run it up on it but I'd hate to have to bring two old tires every time we go camping.

If you're going to keep camping there then I would try and find some tires to protect you toons. We used to do the same thing but were in a boat not toon. Toons won't last long if allowed to beat on the rocks so your best bet is to use some tires and anchor like you did to keep it safe. Sorry about the trouble but things like this happen.

The Answer: Rocks and pontoons

(Cue Carnack the magnificent)

The question is: What two things should people who live in glass houses on the lake not throw.

Anchor farther out and use two or at least a heavier anchor. If you camp often for several days, make your self a bucket anchor with Quickcrete. Tie a short rope with a milk jug buoy to it and drop just far enough off shore. For night boating you can put a glow stick in the jug.

Always wondered how well this would work.
Seems like it would be a possible solution to your ordeal...

It's rated four and a half stars with 19 reviews. I've been thinking about buying one.

They work great, I would highly recomend them. When we anchor on the sand bar and all the ski boats fly by. It lets your boat roll with the waves with out pulling the anchor up.

Thanks, I've never heard of that rope but it sound interesting and makes sense. I think I'll have to give it a try.
