when you say blow out is the prop still spining or is you linkage just adjusted wrong were it actully slips out of gear but you still have the throttle at full or half way. my old johnson motor use to do that if i didnt have the linkage adjusted. just a thought. but the prop would stop turning altogether like you had it in high throttle. have the dealer check that out for you i think you said this is a new boat.

Be very careful and check with the manufacturer of your motor as the prop guard may void your warranty...I've never used one but I do know that such devices have been tried by Mercury and none have become even an option with them?? 8)

Thanks all - I'm going to try the plate from the boat manufacturer as soon as it arrives. If that doesn't do the trick, I'm going to lower the motor (one bolt hole left) and see how that goes. The trial and error gets costly hauling things back and forth. I expected a "ready-to-ride" boat given what I paid.

I''m hearing him say when it starts slipping or whatever, it won't go forward until he stops and goes into reverse. So that should eliminate trim or blowout. And it happens only when he is running through vegetation. So, it seems to happen when there is a load on the prop. Could this be a spun or slipping hub? Or, like previous post said, slipping out of gear.

Interesting anyway............... :donno

Wild ass guess...
Is he wrapping weeds around the prop and it slows down, so when he hits reverse, they spin back off?

Very interesting problem. This plate thing that the dealer is talking about, is it just a flat plate that goes directly behind the prop, like a trolling device? If so, I don't see how that will fix your issue. My bet is on the slipping out of gear, or slipping hub. Every time I've ever heard of prop blow out, the problem can be fixed easilly by trimming down, slowing down, or turning the motor back straight. I've never heard of someone having to stop, and reverse before the problem is fixed. Good Luck to you, and let us know what you find out. Lot's of good people and info. on here, so hopefully the fixing options keep coming. :biggrin2

That's exactly whats going on....when a prop gets wrapped in weeds it creates turbulent water and air pockets...the air pockets cause the prop to ventilate and lose its grip on the water. When he slows down and hits reverse it gets the weeds off and he can go again.
