New Boat Issues

Re: New Boat Issues
Make them take you on a demo ride. These are not normal issues for a new boat. Get the hammer out and start swinging. Ask for Mercs number and call them as well.

Re: New Boat Issues
Not a mechanic but my understanding was the motor would double oil for the first 10 hrs via program an adding additional oil was not needed.
Not sure if that holds true for all hp ranges of motors. Found this link after doing a search. I don' t have my manual but sure it is here at the house somewhere. Put it up along with all the boat stuff, when I took it in for service, so just need to figure out where I put it.
If that is true, you may be triple oiling...........just a thought

Re: New Boat Issues
A few comments that may or may not be helpful but observations from years of buying cars (too many, for sure), two motorhomes, and six boats
.
In most cases, the quality of the dealer and the trust you have in them is as important as the quality of the toy your are buying. I've learned that the hard way a few times. Shopping for the 'best deal' or 'lowest price' doesn't always pay off. In fact, with my most recent pontoon purchase, I would have taken a more serious look at either Sweetwater or Bennington boats but the dealer has a less-than-stellar reputation for service with some of my neighbors. I ended up buying what may be a slightly lesser-quality/featured boat (a Sylvan Mirage) from a dealer that has proved to me over the years that he is always there for the customer after the sale.
As far as Mercury 2 strokes, they will smoke (not the Optimax), especially during start up and until they get to about 100 - 110 degrees. They usually double oil until they warm up. Also, as previously noted, 2 strokes do not like to idle for long periods and will run rough for a bit after periods of extended idle. I strongly suggest you periodically add some Sea Foam to your gas tank to help de-carbonize that thing. The 175 EFI Merc 2 stroke on the boat I just traded for the 'toon was 11 years old and never missed a beat. The dealer did a compression test before we made the trade and he said the cylinders were at factory specs. It was a smokey, gas-guzzling beast but it ran great. I am looking forward to having the Honda 4 stroke on this new boat.

Re: New Boat Issues
That motor should not have any issues during prolonged idle unless it is still running double oil....or you have fouled a plug during the double oil period..or you are running cheap oil..That motor oils at approx 100:1 at idle which is usually not enough to foul plugs...so if you are there is a problem(probably an adjustment issue). Perhaps if you idled it for hours on end it may load up a bit but not much.
As far as stalling when coming from reverse to neutral again leads me to believe its out of adjustment..either to rich at idle or pick up timing and idle speed are to low...this should be an easy fix.
It is not to uncommon for carbureted 2 strokes to ooze some fuel and oil residue into the airbox and then drip out when the motor is tilted way up...it shouldn't be puddled up in the pan but an oily film is not to unusual. The dealer should at least pull the airbox off and make sure that there isn't a carb flooding out just to be sure.
Good Luck.

Re: New Boat Issues
I had a stuck carb float the let gas over flow. I pulled the screw on float housing and blew canned air into it. Fixed it and never leaked again

Re: New Boat Issues
I have a Yamaha 2-stroke carb. outboard and troll at idle alot. Sometimes up to 5 hrs at a time. This is my 6th year with this pontoon and have never had a problem or even a fouled plug.
