We are on the lower Miss. River, about four miles from our home, protected by the levee. We have thought about taking a ride but can only do it when the river is low. We have a lot of barge traffic and the currrent is tough.
We cross the river near our home on weekends, by way of the ferry, from New Roads (La) to St Francisville for lunch. We have a new bridge under construction, about 8 miles from our home that will replace the old ferry. We will miss those ferry rides.
This is the bayou that we live on (Chenal Bayou). It was the main channel of the Mississippi River before it changed directions in the early 1700's. Our lake is an Oxbow, False River, was created by the Mississippi River when it changed directions.
