OK, folks, the problem (that one, anyway) has been solved. I wish I had something to teach or help everyone else out with by relaying something that's hard to find, but it was exactly what most people thought. It was the starter. I have not been back on here for a while, but I promised an update. Not much to learn from this one.
We are really working through some other issues now. I'm learning A LOT. The South Bay is really nice, and I can tell I am going to love it, but we have had our share of problems so far. We are working through them and I think we are getting it dialed in.
I'll put up a new thread to show what we have been through and worked through and maybe it will help a couple of other newbies or bring back new boat (new to us, anyway) frustration memories for some veterans. We'll get it all worked out and I can tell it will be nice! Some problems are with the boat, and the trailer is contributing its share of frustrations as well.
I have to say this, I am super impressed with South Bay as a company. I bought this as a 3 year old boat, and not from them, yet they are treating me like I'm their best customer when it comes to their customer service and help ironing out some things. Other than the starter (which I did not need them for or even talk with them about), none of my issues have been South Bay issues (or failed equipment from them) but they have been from the previous owner not doing some things or paying attention and from a dealer that really did not go over the boat well at all. What an amazing company. Whoever is really at the helm at South Bay is hiring people that are customer oriented to begin with and then they must go through some very serious "how to treat a customer" kind of training. It is really quite impressive, and I am not really a customer of theirs directly, but just an owner.
More to come in a different thread, but the initial issue was just a starter that pooped out on us. Thanks again for all of the help and suggestions. BMR, that starter wiring diagram is now on my boat in my folder on board -- I have a feeling someday I'll need it and I'm sure mine will be similar to Merc's.
