Re: The Dark Side
Yeah Malcolm used to tell me it'd make my Party Cruiser "fly" Yeah, ok. My max speed WOT is 18 mph. Strakes or Flap Tins won't do a damn thing for me.

Re: The Dark Side
I'm a little late to the party but I can't believe no one saw the obvious. The tap fin boat topped out at 5800 RPM. The lifting strake boat hit the rev limiter on that Yamaha at 6100 rpm. I know because I run a 11 pitch prop on my 115 because I'll have a lot of people on it and will pull a tube at the same time. When I'm alone it only goes to 6100 rpm when the rev limiter hits. In this test that means the lifting strakes were more efficient and were starting to work when the engine hit the limiter. It needs more prop. If you propped it out properly that lifting strake boat would have blown right by the tap fin boat. Lastly, I'm willing to bet a stock sweetwater will hit 25 mph without anything on those toons. My 25 footer went 27 mph before I put the top on it with just me on it.

Re: The Dark Side
The Yamaha 115 will not go above 6100 rpm due to it's rev limiter. That's why the straked boat topped out at that rpm in the comparison. The boat with the lifting strakes would have gone much faster with a steeper pitched prop. The prop they used wouldn't allow the straks to do their job. That is a huge problem with their comparison and would null and viod the comparison. In order to do it right they should have first propped each boat out properly. Dahhhhh. Also, I find it hard to believe that the boats used in the comparison wouldn't go 25mph w/o anything on the logs.

Re: The Dark Side
So the theory behind the Tap-Crap-Fins is that they use the water sprayed up by the pontoons to create lift and help get the boat on a plane? I'm pretty sure the only water spray I get is up front near the bow.

Re: The Dark Side
Hi All,
A new guy here, I've been reading and learning from you guys for a few months now, sense the wife talked about getting toon form the grandkids.
Anyway, till now sense I didn't have much useful to add, I never registered and logged on, till now.
This string or more specifically this product has me going.
Being a life long Minnasotian, I've been in fishing boats all my life, and we currently have a small fishing boat and runabout.
And I've been trying to understand the WOT results, ie,
"The blue lifting strake version reached 6100 RPMs at a top speed of 23.5 miles per hour.
The tan TAP Fin Sweetwater topped out at 5800 RPMs at (a top speed of) 25.0 mph".
If we assume the data is accurate, and that the motors, props, boats and loads are the same,
what would cause the different engine speeds and boat speeds?
I can "buy" that some lift is generated by water hitting and being deflected down by the TAP fin, this is the same as a muzzle brake on a gun, whether the lift generated is enough to do anyhting or not I don't, some smart person would have to run the numbers to tell, but;
Thinking out loud, I can that understand that if there was less drag, a motor could be at less RPM to go a bit faster, meaning that this prop has a better bite on the water. But what's happening for the other to be slower with a higher engine RPM. For this to happen, this prop has to be "slipping" more.
But does that make any sense given these 2 boats are supposed to be the same? Could the water at the props be that different?
Dan
ps, what is going on with this software, why does the window keep going to the top of the text?

Nonono..... The epic detail is they only work if you put a can of gas out there while under way. Then the FapTins work GREAT!badmoonrising wrote:Yep. Epic fail on that little detail, lol.
