I would imagine it has been mentioned here many times before. Pink coil cleaner is the easiest, cheapest and quickest way to clean them toons. I put it in a pump sprayer. Spray 1 half of a tube at a time. Let it sit for 2-3 minutes then just hose it off. No scrubbing nothing. works like a charm.

Will eather of these cleaners damage the paint on the boat trailer? When I clean my toons the boat will be on the trailer.

Does anyone have the answer?

My curent toon sits on a galvanized trailer and my last one on a painted trailer. I have used the pink stuff on both and never had any trouble with it damaging anything on either of them.

I cleaned mine with the NAPA cleaner this weekend and its a night and day difference. Sprayed it on with a pump sprayer let it sit about 30 seconds and wash off VERY good. No problems with trailer.

Have not used the coil cleaner but used a lot of diff thing over the years that was plenty strong with no damage or streaking. I always wet the trailer well so if an when the cleaner hits it at least it will be diluted by the water. Seem to have worked so far.

Would love to see pics of the cleaned toons. Actually, some "before" and "after" would be great. Did you like the final finish with just using the NAPA cleaner? I haven't done mine yet but will also be getting some Sharkhide to protect the finish on the toons after they are cleaned - this is on my winter list of projects to do.

So I used the Napa Alum. Brightener yesterday. I am happy with the end results, toons look
much better. I think wetting the surface before spraying is the way to go. bought 2 spray
bottles 10 bucks each, gallon was 27 bucks locally. Used all of one bottle and a little bit of the second jug. I only did the exterior sides and the cones. Would have needed some sort
of breathing appratus if I had gotten under the boat. It is on the trailer. Rinsed as I went
along. Regards, old jim

I reviewed the MSDS sheets for both products and both contain hydrofluoric acid & phosphoric acid as the main ingredients. Both companies are vague as to the actual concentrations so I have no idea if one might work faster but I'll bet the results are the same. Buy which ever one you can find.

IMO you will get some streaking of the paint on a trailer if this stuff hits it undiluted. These solutions come in poly jugs so it *might* not harm synthetic carpet but I would generously rinse carpets & bunks just to be safe.

So is everyone using Sharkhide after cleaning their toons with NAPA cleaner?

I would think that if you do not the toons will be black again after a couple of trips in the water.

Mine came out nice, but not perfect, and its only 3 months old. They oxidize up real fast. I did one side and need to finish the other. I will try to remember to get some pics

The toons of my new Bennington were tarnished after 4 months, but not actually dirty.
I went after them with White Diamond metal/aluminum polish, available @ Advance, and a Porter Cable Dual Action buffer with a 6" wool polishing bonnet. The Mothers' mag/aluminum polish I bought was simply a junk product--no comparison.

After much experimenting, I found 3 dime size squirts would polish 2'x2' section. It went on black, turned to light gray, and eventually buffed off when it dried--after a minute or so. The really good polishing comes right before the powder blows off. Then I wiped down the area with a rag to remove the black aluminum oxide.

After two polishing applications and some spot polishing, the boat really looked great. Today, I put the Sharkhide on the rear of the boat--only to have black swirls go into the Sharkhide. Now, I've got to wipe the boat down a few times with lacquer cleaner to get every big of black oxide off it. I think the wipe downs will be a long, drawn out process.

Nothing worthwhile seems like it comes easy in marine detailing.

Anyone ever try JJV's Best Aluminum cleaner? Saw some good reviews about it.

Reviving the dead here. Im looking for the most common way people use the Napa aluminum brightener. Straight or diluted? Idf diluted, how much? I read one post that said 3 to 1. Thanks, Frank.
