Hi, New to the forum. Wondering if anyone here has an easy way to remove the factory carpet from the decking on my pontoon boat in order to install new carpet. The decking seems to be in good condition. any suggestions would be appriciated. This is a upgrade project and I welcome any suggestions as to where to get the carpet, glue, and etc.

Well here is my 2cents....I just asked this question about two weeks ago and here is what I found out. I looked at the local hardware store(lowes/home depot) for outdoor carpet, they didn't have the color I was looking for or the style. Depending on what your looking for (style/weight) you can get it there cheaper than online, I have a 24ft toon and it was going to run around 170.00 at local store, then I think around 18.00 for a bucket of outdoor carpet glue. I ended up going to "pontoonstuff.com" and ordered my new carpet, I upgraded to 20oz and was able to get the exact color I wanted(tan) it ran me 225.00. From what I have read you need to take everything off the boat(seats, rails) and then you can get a scrapper to start at one end and try to pull it up on your way back. I found a link somewhere to where someone showed how to do it(I will look for it and send it to you). I haven't started my project yet, but once it gets warm it will happen. Good luck, I am sure someone else here can help better than what I have stated.

Yeah everything above and I recommened waiting until it's warm out. The glue is hard as hell to remove in cold temps.

West Marine and Overton carry the carpet along with this one

Sorry didn't see Sammtoon's post about pontooonstuff, doing some market trading today, pretty hectic.
Seems like to remove most things that are glued down a heat gun is used, might be able to start out with a high watt hair dryer just to see how it does.

when i did mine, so much wood came up with the carpet i just decided to replace the wood too. if i had to do it again i would try something different than just yanking as hard as i could from bow to stern. i would use an extra person, try more port to starboard angle. while one pulls, have the other person work the carpet/wood point with something to help separate without pulling up wood.

mine pulled right off but it was old. then i cut out all the old wood.
then i put in an aluminum deck and vinyl flooring.

Also make sure it stays dry till the glue dries. When i did mine it rained and water seeped through the cover, thus causing the glue to seep through the carpet.

I will never put carpet on a boat again, I will use shop floor rubber the next time.

I agree! I can not figure out why all pontoons come with carpet. If my JC was offered without carpet I would have gotten it that way.

As is the carpet goes under all the topside stuff. There is a thin strip along the back of the boat that gets ugly as it is not covered by the mooring cover.

pulled our gas grill off the boat for a friend to cook a bunch of brats at the beach park.
they set it back onboard. i had been drinking (no, not just for the taste :drunks ) and i didn't
think to check if the grease trap had been emptied. well part of it emptied onto the carpet.
left a nice 4" diameter black stain that never came out. got some other stains over the years,
too. i'm so glad to have vinyl now.

On my previous pontoon boats I had carpet because that is how the dealer ordered them (bought both at boat show). To me the carpet was always a hassle in keeping clean and trying not to get stained. Carpet can be labor intensive. When I ordered my new boat, I discovered that the manufacturer offered an upgrade option rubber covering. I had not seen this previously and had a sample sent to inspect. I decided to go with the rubber and it is the best decision that I could have made. It looks great and is so easy to keep clean with a broom or mop when dirty. No more problems with stained, wet and worn carpet. My dealer had never seen this flooring and now is ordering half of his '09 inventory pontoons with the rubber floor based on my boat and experience with it.
