Water proof tape?

#1 Post by WaltF » Wed Apr 29, 2009 9:23 am

Hey...
Do they make a water proof tape? Or does duct tape work?
Reason im asking is last time i was out i noticed my bilge pump came on a couple times after hauling butt around... once stopped, it never did... (up till then it has Never come on)

Im thinking the first time i went out and passed over a big log, that i didnt see, :(, i might have punctured a hole in the hose that covers the throttle cables as they enter the partial 'middle tube' where my i/o is sitting, and water is getting in there when im going fast...
Was thinking i could just tape it up as a quick fix.. :)

Its down in the slip right now so i cant see to confirm my theory, but ive been thinking about it ever since we were last down there and i came up with this thought.. :)

Try Grollia tape or the sticky aluminum backed tape heat and air guys use. However if it is a small hold out of sight you might get buy with JB weld

I second the gorilla tape, that stuff is amazing! I fixed a hole in a kiddy pool and it works great...

When we put boat uo for winter we have a big plastic tarp we put over mooring cover. This sheds ice and snow better than fabric. Had to cut it to fit around Bimini uprights and to hold seams together we used gorilla tape. It held all winter and had a hell of a time pulling it off plastic tarp so yoes it is awesome stuff

mines in the shop right now fixing the same problem. real beatch. my temp fix till i could get it in was to lean over the back, wrap the cables in saran wrap, then wrap that in some pretty thick vinyl sheeting and then zip tie that and then i used black electrical tape. it didn't really stop the leak, it just slowed it down tremendously. i'm going to spend over a thousand dollars to repair the boot and then all the damage the water did in the hull thanks to the dumb*** that had the boat before me.

dang.. 1k? bummer!
geese, sounds like the whole block was sitting in water then...
ive only had a couple inches in mine, then the bilge automatically kicks in and empties it out, so its not a very big leak....
None the less i need to find out how its getting in there.
The water was too fricken cold to jump in and look last time we were down there.. :)
and since it only seemed to happen when i was hauling full throttle, im not too worried about it when its just sitting in the slip...
Another thing that ive thought it could be is the ladder in the back.
When there is only a few people in the toon and im hauling butt, the ladder seems to direct alot of water to spray around... enough to actually make me think this may also be how the water is getting in there... so that boot may be just fine....

Just dont know yet.... but will find out next time we go down there.. :)

if you can spot the hole, a little silicone will fix it.

the idiot that had the boat before me would only turn the bilge on when he noticed the belts spraying water onto the deck under the rear sofa.
