Power issue

#1 Post by bjb21 » Wed Jul 01, 2015 8:09 pm

Hello,

I have a mercruiser 350 that when i turn on the key I don't get the alarm sound for the gauges nor does the engine turn over. I do have power to the radio, lights, blower, etc. I have replaced the batteries and looked at all the fuses that I coud find. Does anyone have any other suggestions that I coud look at?

Thanks,
Bjb21

I'm only saying this because I've done this myself, but make sure it's in Neutral. It's really easy to have bumped it slightly and put it into gear without realizing it.

Do all boats have that alarm? Mine has never beeped at me prior to being cranked. I never really thought about it as I've never had any problems.

I just spent a week chasing a similar problem with my Honda outboard. Not only make sure the shifter is in neutral, make sure the cable from the shifter is actually moving the lever on the transmission to neutral. My inner cable failed even though the outer sheath was connected. Inner cable moves the lever.

In addition to all the other suggestions...check the lanyard and/or ignition wiring connections behind the console. Just had this happen on a brand new boat. Turns out I loosened up the lanyard connections when storing the mooring cover underneath the console.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did double check that it was in neutral and it does shift. I talked with the mechanic that winterized it and he is thinking it may be a relay to the starter as everything worked fine when it was winterized. I will let you know when/if I figure it out.

You can easily bench test the relay. I learned that last week. After I installed a new relay.

Have you checked in the engine compartment for an engine fuse or breaker? Had the fuse holder on a boat that failed, so check that as well.
