Front Lounge/Bed project.

#1 Post by Rustynuts » Thu Aug 13, 2015 6:58 pm

We used to have a SeaRay 200 Select that I made a bow filler that my wife loved and lounged in. When we got our Toon last year she liked the lounge seating but wanted something bigger to lay on and since our boat came with a full tent enclosure we want to do more camping on it. We tried spending a weekend on it last year and I fought the inflatable mattresses the whole time and wanted something that did NOT inflate. Being a woodworker that just happens to have a CNC router I started by drawing everything up in CAD and came up with a slip joint framework that is all made out of 7 ply Baltic Birch which is very strong and then did some custom cutouts and holes to lighten all the panels. The front and rear panel have 2 tabs, than the top panel locks onto to make the whole thing very solid. The top panel is cut back on the side to allow the factory seats to open once the bed cushions are raised. I just got done making a cardboard template to give to my upholsterer which happens to be one of my good customers. I am going to have him split it into a left and right cushion to make it easier to handle. I am also thinking of cutting a hatch into the top panel that could hinge up to be able to store the bedding underneath in a plastic bin. This will probably never be removed as my wife loves a big open lounge area to sit with the grandkids. Let me know what you guys think I am open to any suggestions to making it better. I will post more pics after I have the pads done and the parts all sanded and sealed.

Here is a pic of the enclosure on our boat.

That's incredible workmanship. Well thought out in order to be very lightweight.

That full enclosure is also a fine piece. They're somewhat rare on the retail market--unless purchased thru the factory at a pretty high price.

Just goes to show what kind of results you can get when you mix the right tools and the right training for the task at hand! Nice job.

Well got the new pads back from the Upholsterer, and while the color isnt an exact match, he had it in stock and gave me a good deal on it. They fit in nice and snug and the whole this can be taken apart or put together in less than 5 minutes. I doubt it will ever come down much as it is pretty comfy up there :biggrin2
