I am considering purchase of a boat from private party.
It is a 24 foot Manitou Oasis with 2006 90hp evenruide 2 stroke etec
I took it out today.
Boat weights 1980lbs, plus 300+ for motor, 100 lbs gas and we had about 750lbs in crew members.
Top end was 20 mph... Is this a normal speed? I expected 3-4 more mph.
Measured with GPS known to be accurate to 1 mph
Also the boat hesitated about 20 times over 20 minutes. They called me back and said dealer indicates that the over rev protection was most likely kicking in... Does this sound reasonable, i think it happened when we were going wide open. they plan to have dealer check it out... but
is it normal? I tried different tilt, but did not fix.
What say you?

Re: question regarding speed and performance of Evinrude etec
If it's hitting the rev limiter it's needs to be reproped bigger

Re: question regarding speed and performance of Evinrude etec
You need a higher pitch prop of your hitting the rev limit. Find out what the max RPM is for the outboard at WOT. You should not be exceeding that max at any time when operating the motor. For every one inch increase in pitch you should reduce your WOT RPMs by 200 or so.
I have a 24ft with a 90 HP and a 600+ lb top added to it, so I would say the weight is about the same as you described. Top end is 21 MPH on my boat measured with GPS.
If you re-prop to bring your RPMs in line that may add to or take away from your top speed.

Re: question regarding speed and performance of Evinrude etec
Thanks for input.
I ended up getting 22 mph at WOT @ 5000 RPM. So I guess that is normal.
I went back and looked at it again as I did not pay attention to the RPM to see if it was really dropping or what. Turns out it was a simpler problem.
Needed a new water filter and some new clean gas! No more hesitations.
So now I own a pontoon boat!
Sea Legs are on order. I will post how they work in a few months.
