How to Swith Out and Install a New Captains Chair...?

#1 Post by Mosnowman » Sat Mar 26, 2016 3:44 pm

So I really want more height in my Captains Seat so I can see over passengers without sitting on a inflatable bumper. My toon has aluminum under belly and I don't want to deal with taking it off to switch out seats. My main question is this...

To remove seat tube do I simply unscrew it from the floor, or is it bolted down? I don't want to get under the toon and deal with the under belly to remove nuts. It looks as though there is a set screw inside seat tube pictured but you can't reach it from inside the tube to unscrew it and then pull the short tube out and replace with a longer one. Anyone have experience with this? I have zero mechanical ability and was hoping it is a matter of simply unscrewing things from the floor and replacing with a longer tube? Thoughts? And thanks in advance!!!

The chairs are most likely bolted down. I was able to remove the aluminum skirt along the boat just under the floor and touching the top of the tubes. That exposed the underside from the outside. I made a pole to attach a box end wrench to. Had the nut drop into a taped closed off wrench while turning the screw from the top. Worked really well.

It looks like you may be able to buy an extension for that. I just Googled swivel Eze seat extension and found a few for different styles. Another option is to have an extension made at a machine shop from aluminum. Pretty straight forward as it just bolts between the existing seat mount and seat bottom. You could just use some aluminum square tubing if you only need a few inches. For the price of those extensions I'd probably go that route if one fits your style as they are only around 40 bucks or less.

Your cheapest and easiest route is to go with the aluminum spacers. I plan on doing this with my front fishing seats.

You don't really need much. A couple inches will go a long way. I think it will be just as sturdy.

I did something like this on my last boat. The seat base would swivel, but would not slide back, and I needed both height and knee room. I bought some 2" aluminum channel from McMaster-Carr, and mounted that between the seat bottom and the base that it screwed into. By offsetting the bolts I was able to position the seat back a couple inches. Worked very well.
