How do you take the steering wheel off?

I'm slowly taking my 94 suncruiser pontoon boat apart in hopes of eventually redecking it.

One snag is that the steering wheel won't come off of the OMC Steering assembly. Is it suppose to twist off?

Also, the steering cable only detaches at the motor? not on the steering assembly?

Thanks for any and all advice

I had to use a puller to get mine off.

squirt some liquid wrench and let soak, If you don't have a gear puller use a rubber mallet or a piece of wood and hammer to knock it through.

Put the nut back on the shaft, with the top of the nut flush with the shaft hit the top of it with a hammer while pulling up on the wheel. This may take a few hits or some help but will work.

Yep; what Phil & Tkrein said it would help if we had three hands. Equal pressure on two sides of the steering wheel while using the mallet helps. If the wife helps let her apply pressure to one side while you apply pressure to the other and you use the mallet. If a trusted friend helps they can use the mallet while you apply equal pressure to two sides.
