Has anyone tried one of the Sideshift units?

They claim that it is an easy DIY install but I found one marina that sold it with an installed price of $2800. It is basically a very specialized trolling motor and if it was less than a grand, it may be an option for some but at this price it is a nonstarter for me.

Check it out at http://www.sideshift.com

If you're halfway mechanically inclined you could make your own for about $200 using a 12 volt actuator and trolling motor. See below.

I know zero about actuators, contollers and remote controls. Where or how can one learn about them?

I believe I recall that BobG made his own remote controlled retractable trolling motor / thruster. I wish I had just a fraction of his knowledge and skills.
