SYLVAN owners - post HP, engine height, prop, and speed/RPM
I would be interested to compare the speeds you guys are getting with your setup. Please specify your speed via GPS or Speedo and the RPMs so I can calculate slip (from here http://www.go-fast.com/Prop_Slip_Calculator.htm). Please be honest about speed - inflated numbers may make you feel better for whatever reason but it won't help me ensure I have the right setup.
Here are the details:
Boat: 8522 Mirage LES Tritoon with 25" RPT tubes
Engine/HP: Yamaha F150
Engine Height: mounted in second hole from bottom
Prop: Solas Rubex 14.5x15 (part number 9531-145-15)
Speed: 33 mph @5800 with full tank and 3 adults. 34 mph @5800 with just me and 1/4 tank
Slip: 17%
I feel my speeds may be a little low. I know a pontoon is not a go-fast boat like I used to have but I still want it to run at the optimum that it can.
I trim the boat to 3/4 on the gauge to get these speeds (lots of trim compared to other go fast boats) and can fully trim up and the speed doesn't change. Also, I can get on plane as easily at 1/2 trim as I can with the drive fully tucked in.
Thanks!

Re: SYLVAN owners - post HP, engine height, prop, and speed/RPM
I'm at work and I dont have a Sylvan so this might not mean much as I dont have all the details you're looking for..
But...
2016 Tahoe Cascade 25' triple toon
Mercury 150HP
Enertia prop
Garmin echoMap 53dv
Registered top speed of 34.5MPh
Not sure of RPM and not sure of how many people were on it at the time.
Might've happened when dealer was doing test run.

Appreciate it as it adds more data points. Prop size and RPM would be helpful.thepezident wrote:I'm at work and I dont have a Sylvan so this might not mean much as I dont have all the details you're looking for..

My 24' Bennie with the Express 3rd tube is running 40 mph @ 6000 rpm's running a Yamaha Reliance 15 pitch prop. I think I've hit the point of no return. You've got to really throw the horsepower to get'em much faster.
You may be a better prop away from another 5 or so mph.

I dont have a SYLVAN, but i'll post my specs for reference.
Boat: SunChaser DS22 (pontoon) - 25" logs with under skinning (no strakes)
Engine/HP: Evinrude ETEC 150 - 2 stroke pontoon edition
Engine Height: mounted in second hole from bottom
Prop: Solas Rubex 14.25x17
Speed: 36 mph @5100 with full tank and 2 adults. (GPS)
Slip: i'm sure it does
I think i'm a little over propped.
I also have a 15x15 that is cupped but i cant get anymore RPM's out of that one either and top speed is 35 with 2 ppl and full tank of fuel.

Re: SYLVAN owners - post HP, engine height, prop, and speed/RPM
At 5100 rpm , you are definitely over-propped . Might consider going down a couple pitched to get the engine in its optimum top end RPM range . Plus its better for the engine not to overwork it .mbarmer wrote:I dont have a SYLVAN, but i'll post my specs for reference.

Re: SYLVAN owners - post HP, engine height, prop, and speed/RPM
I see you have a stainless Solas prop with 15 pitch. That would appear to be the correct pitch.
Is your speed via GPS or the speedometer?
Do you know anyone with a tritoon on your lake that might could loan you a Yamaha Reliance 15 pitch prop? I don't hear of other owners complaining about the Reliance prop. (My dealer originally equipped my boat with a Yamaha M series 14 pitch prop and I was hitting the rev limiter.)
The Solas props are fine products, but sometimes one brand just works better than another.

The RPM range of that engine is 5300 to 6000. With a light load of 2 adults I would want a prop that can get to the 6000 so that when I had a 6-8 adults the rpms would still be in the range. You can do some serious damage to the engine with that prop.
Re: SYLVAN owners - post HP, engine height, prop, and speed/RPM
Completely agree that engine is being forced to WORK below suggested WOT range and is thus OVERLOADED... Drop several inches of pitch to allow it to reach full RPM and full HP which in the end is less load....justfishing wrote:mbarmer wrote:I dont have a SYLVAN, but i'll post my specs for reference.

Re: SYLVAN owners - post HP, engine height, prop, and speed/RPM
I have a Sylvan 8522 with 150 HP Etec motor. Haven't checked top speed in a while, but last time I did , I could run 40 mph gps, 42 speedometer. This is with 1/2 tank gas , bimini top up, two adults. Might add I have two RPT tubes, not a tritoon. If I remember right the tach read 5500 RPM. Hope this helps, my prop is a Solas and in my signature block below,

Re: SYLVAN owners - post HP, engine height, prop, and speed/RPM
Maybe it is the extra weight of the center toon -Sylvan uses a full length tube on their tri-toons. We wanted the tri for the rough water handling but more importantly for the in floor ski locker.ArkieBoater wrote:I have a Sylvan 8522 with 150 HP Etec motor. I am taking it in to the dealer in a couple of weeks for warranty issues and they are going to move the motor up one more hole - currently 3 from top. We will see if that helps.
Re: SYLVAN owners - post HP, engine height, prop, and speed/RPM
It's not the weight, I test drove one, same size sylvan but with a Merc 150, It hit 41mph with 2 adults and 2 children. They have to figure out the set up for sure.
