I use Mother's Aluminum and Mag polish. Whatever you use....it's a LOT of work....

I'm still waiting for the magic cleaner/polisher that comes out that makes this project quicker and cheaper. Whichever company can make that happen will make a fortune! There has to be a way that doesn't require 20 damn labor hours and hundreds of dollars

Sadly you're very correct. I bought my toon and the tubes were filthy. A little Google. A little Amazon, and I bought what I thought would solve the problem and I would have perfect pontoons when I was done.
Nope.
Unless your boat is fairly new with just some "gunk" it's going to be a job. And even if they are fairly new; it's a multi-step process at minimum. From what I can gather it goes like this:
Aluminum cleaner/acid
Rinse
Scrub with scotch bright
Rinse
Aluminum cleaner again
Rinse
Compound to remove scotch bright scratches
Rinse/ use product to remove residue.
Polish to shine
Shark hide or other protectant (I used a metal "wax")

it went with the Mary Kate Aluminex - it took off the surface stuff no problem. Anything that was really set in took a second hit. And anything that was still on there took scrubbing.
It does not make them shiny though - you'll still need to polish after
