Suzuki idle problem

#1 Post by ezrollin » Fri Nov 04, 2016 8:29 am

I have a 2005 Suzuki 90 df with an idle problem. It will start and run for a minute or two but dies seemingly as it warms up,then it is hard to start unless I let it sit for a while. Anyone know how to check the IAC valve and can it be cleaned, adjust etc ?

This is the picture of your IAC and it should be connected to your throttle body. Unplug and unbolt off throttle body and blast the crap out of it with carb cleaner. That having been said. Can you answer a few questions:

how old is the gas you're using?
When was the last time you used it and it ran OK?
Does it remain running if you keep throttle to it?

It sounds like a fuel starvation issue. Can you get hold of a portable gas tank and hook it up directly to the motor with fresh gas. If it runs good like that you can eliminate fuel, fuel tank and fuel line issues and start focusing on the motor.

Thanks for your reply. I have removed the IAC valve, I will clean it and try fresh gas tomorrow and post the result. Should I apply 12v to it to see if it moves?

You could. I don't think it's your valve if it wouldn't run with throttle put to it. Did the motor sit for a while?

Yes it had sat for a while when I was building my pontoon boat. I replaced the hp fuel pump, the fuel regulator, low pressure fuel filter and removed and flushed the injectors. I have had it in the water and running since then. I got fresh gasoline yesterday and checked the bulb to see if it was pumping up. I discovered one fuel line had a small split at the filter connection. I cut it off, reconnected and pumped it again and could see leakage at the low pressure filter fuel line connections. I'm going to address this problem and replace those fuel lines before continuing. These aren't the braided fuel lines but the softer rubber ones with a plastic selve around them. I don't see a fuel line hose kit offered but at least one of those seem to be a formed hose. I'm wondering if regular fuel hose from the auto store will suffice ... it isn't formed, so don't know if it will kink. What does everyone else use. ##### Ok, found the fuel lines, I had to do click on fuel pump and it shows them there as individual items. I'll call my local dealer or order online.

Very good, I just changed my fuel lines out myself. I used some gray stuff that West Marine recommended. I'd be curious to know if you get her running right. It' been my experience that when troubleshooting, always start with the simplest and most inexpensive possible fixes first and go up from there.

IAC's are a known issue with the older 90/115/140 engines. ALSO they have a pretty low idle RPM and if you have a iffy spark plug or two it might not want to idle. I know my 140 and previous 70 Suzuki's were pretty picky on sparkplugs. Dying after it warms up for a bit could also indicate a weak ignition coil, usually weak ones will fire fine until they get warmed up a bit and that's also not unheard of with these engines.
