Finally changed my prop, here are the results

#1 Post by bcapp » Mon Jul 10, 2017 6:55 am

So I finally changed out my prop on my 2012 Berkshire Tritoon. The motor is a Mercury 150 4 stroke. The Tritoon has lifting strakes. The boat length is 24 feet. My original prop 14px16 would top out 5900 rpm and run 33 mph.

The new prop which is a 14 pitch enertia eco tops out at 5200 rpm and 32mph. I was hoping to get more top end speed with the new prop. It does however plane off quicker. What would you guys suggest for me to do if I want more top speed?

I guarantee you one thing, that enertia will hold the boat better in rough water and with more people on the boat, and for water sports. I put my 14 enertia on when I know I am going to have more than 4 or 5 PPL onboard, its a bigger wheel and really bites with no cavitation. you might try raising your motor one hole, and try the 16P back on there, that should get you a little more, I have a berk Tritoon 24 also so we should be pretty similar, do you have the center sport tube, or full length center

Good to know. These results were actually with 5 adults a 1 child. The boat was loaded down for sure. I have the center sport tube.

Get out by yourself when you have 10 gallons of gas in the boat. And make sure you have a GPS speedometer or way to read speeds with a GPS. Pitot based speedometers are inherently inaccurate.

Then report back to us on your speeds. Your prop choice should be the right one.

Get 5 people in a boat, especially if two are sitting in front, and your speeds will suffer greatly.

Hydraulic jack plate, streamline your transom to direct splash and spray from the outboards midsection. Transom mounted spoilers to direct the water from between pontoons, down, to lighten up the stern. What's in your wallet???

How much have you played around with the trim? My tritoon runs its fastest with lots of trim ,just as it starts to porpoise. Shows just under 3/4 on the trim gauge.

Results can vary between boats but our 24 foot Berkshire with 2.75 package has a 150 Yamaha and spins a 14.5" x 15P Solas New Saturn right up to 6K with 2 people and full gas with a top speed of 38 MPH

Sounds like that boat is around where it should be with that motor. Your prop slip is in the 11-13% range depending on what your gear ratio is meaning its running pretty efficient with that prop. I don't have any experience with tritoons but I would imagine that's about as good as your going to get unless you can find a prop that will let you spin a bit faster. The max speed a 14P prop on that motor at that RPM could theoretically get would be around 36mph. If that motor is running right and making full power your right where you should be.

Teecro's boat is running about the same slip around 11% which is interesting and I believe that is very relative to you having similar hydrodynamics but hes able to spin a larger prop faster.

I would do a compression test to assure you have the potential to make full power, if you could get that motor up to around 5800rpm that prop should have you running around 36mph at the same slip. I am assuming a 1.92 gear ratio, if I am wrong it wont be much different.

You have an Enertia not an Eco. The smallest pitch Eco is 17 and its 16 inch diameter. I have a new Manitou Tritoon 22 footer that's pretty heavy. Dry weight of 2650 pounds without the motor. With no tweaking yet I saw 43 WOT with a 18 pitch Rebel prop on an Evinrude G2 HO 150.
