Question about older mercury/mariner motor swap

#1 Post by Rudebob » Tue Jul 18, 2017 7:42 am

I have a 2000 sweetwater with a 50HP merc. I have located a clean and little used 17' aluminum fishing boat with a 90HP Mariner. My goal is to purchase this or a similar boat, swap motors and resell the aluminum fishing boat with the expectation that a 50HP on a light 17' fishing boat will still perform well enough to not get dinged too much on resell value. Based on my research I figure if I can do this right, I can effectively repower my pontoon to the max HP limit while keeping my costs very minimal.

With the exception of props, which will likely have to be changed on both crafts, will everything else swap over exactly-controls, wiring, etc. or will I have other costs in the swap? BTW the 50 HP is a 2000 year model and the Mariner a 95.

Thanks

The Mariner is essentially a Japanese built Mercury. Parts may or may not fit. It is essentially trial and error. I would think it would be a good swap--of both engines have the same length lower units.
