1972 Evinrude help needed...

#1 Post by Retired OG » Sat Oct 21, 2017 2:42 pm

OK...here is what I've done....rebuilt the carbs (they were in dire need) adjusted the throttle linkage and replaced the rectifier....it now charges the battery and my tach works again...it still has an intermittent miss/burp both at idle and at higher rpms but if I idle it down below 1k it dies....Yesterday, I went to try and set the timing and the timing light looked weak and appeared to be possibly firing twice per rpm... my guess is that my problem is with the power pack....thoughts???

ETA: I just came in from trying to start it....nothing... I even sprayed starter fluid in it...I don't know if it's even getting spark now, because nobody is here to turn the key for me.
Yesterday, I ran it for a good half hour before switching the key off and it was running good considering the intermittent misses...

2nd Edit: This morning, after I tried to start it, I hooked up the timing light, tied the trigger back & turned the key...I got one flash of light & I could hear it fire...once...
About two hours later, I tried it again, & now it's running....could temperature be causing this? It was pretty chilly last night & this morning, but it had warmed up to about 70 when it fired again....can the temp. affect the power pack?

I know this question is a couple of days old, but it sounds like your power pack is on the way out.

Thanks for the reply... That was my first thought too...even my second and third thought...BUT I got to looking under the flywheel and it looks like my charge coils leaked fluid some time in the past that has hardened into an epoxy like substance...I think my main problem is there, but if I'm gonna have to pull the flywheel, I think my best bet is to replace my entire ignition system....I've already put my kicker motor up for sale to finance the project.

Well. I sold my "kicker" motor and ordered a new stator, timer base, power pack and ignition switch....the only part I replaced that "DIDN'T" help with performance, was the power pack....it'll be nice to keep as a spare...motor is running like a new unit...

The biggest improvement I had was when I replaced the timer base and sensor/trigger...
