1972 Evinrude help needed...

OK...here is what I've done....rebuilt the carbs (they were in dire need) adjusted the throttle linkage and replaced the rectifier....it now charges the battery and my tach works again...it still has an intermittent miss/burp both at idle and at higher rpms but if I idle it down below 1k it dies....Yesterday, I went to try and set the timing and the timing light looked weak and appeared to be possibly firing twice per rpm... my guess is that my problem is with the power pack....thoughts???
ETA: I just came in from trying to start it....nothing... I even sprayed starter fluid in it...I don't know if it's even getting spark now, because nobody is here to turn the key for me.
Yesterday, I ran it for a good half hour before switching the key off and it was running good considering the intermittent misses...
2nd Edit: This morning, after I tried to start it, I hooked up the timing light, tied the trigger back & turned the key...I got one flash of light & I could hear it fire...once...
About two hours later, I tried it again, & now it's running....could temperature be causing this? It was pretty chilly last night & this morning, but it had warmed up to about 70 when it fired again....can the temp. affect the power pack?
