20 foot Bennington - wrong prop

#1 Post by joe20toon » Sat Nov 18, 2017 3:27 am

I know someone with a 20 foot Bennington, 70hp Yamaha that hits the 6,300rpm limiter fast.
Does anyone know the right prop for this pontoon. I don't know the pitch and diameter of his prop.
It's hard to believe a dealer would let this boat off property with that prop. This is the owner's first boat and not experienced with the issue. I'm guessing it's been 3 years or so since he bought it. It's doubtful the dealer will help out now...

A Mercury Black Max 14 x 13 with the proper hub kit would be right in the ballpark...

You can usually see the prop model and pitch on the barrel of on the hub. Tell them to pickup a prop with 2 inches more pitch.

If he is satisfied with the cruising sleed, just leave the prop alone and just keep it under 6000 rpms.

I thought I posted a reply to this earlier this am...?

Michigan Wheel calc indicates a diameter of 13-3/8 - 13-3/4 with a pitch of 15.

I'm sure it's smaller then a 15 pitch.

Do most marine 'dealers' let you try different sizes before buying? He is moving to the Solomons, MD, area.

Thanks all for the advice...

Actually considering the smaller diameter quoted by MIP that pitch might be in the ballpark. What I have started to notice since purchasing a Yamaha is that they for some reason tend to come with smaller diameter props and steeper pitch than a comparable Mercury. My F150 came propped with a 14.5 x 15P and the neighbors new Benny with 115 came with a really small diameter and high numbered pitch like a 12 x 17P. I think it sounds wrong but his boat seems to perform as it should.

As to try before you buy on props, very few will do this. One trick is to buy through the likes of Amazon where the sellers generally must abide by Amazons return rule...
