ENGINE MANUAL HELP?

Hey guys I just picked up a second boat and it has a different engine than the first one. This boat has a 1978 Mercury 700 outboard on it. I am wondering if there is a way to get an engine manual and parts manual? Is there a place I can download them or buy hard copies? I went to try cranking the engine today and found it wouldn’t crank. Doing some checking I found there was battery voltage at the main incoming lead. I had ground at the coil and when I turn the key to crank position, I had battery voltage at the other side of the coil, but the coil didn’t close and crank the engine. I’m hoping to get these manuals so I can get part numbers and R&R procedures. Thanks for any info guys.

Ryan

contact this guy Bill Kelly, friend of mine down here in the Panhandle. He's forgotten more about Mercury Outboards than most ever knew.

I picked up a 1972 service manual for my 50 hp Evinrude on ebay for $24...my old motor now runs as good as new....There is no substitute for a "Motor Specific" factory service manual....

Retired: yeah I am really hoping to find my specific manual. I’ve tried Ebay and haven’t had much luck there. I would like to get it running great and keep the motor, but have gotten some info saying no it’s a bad motor? Either way all I need it to do is last me a few years and then I’ll upgrade boats. Thanks for the info

The guy who sold me the boat and motor I have now, thought the motor was bad too...Well, some of the components were bad and MOST of the previous attempts to "tune" it, were obviously done without the aid of a service manual, but the motor itself had GREAT compression....In all, I had to replace the stator, rectifier, timer base and trigger, ignition switch, spark plugs and clean, rebuild and adjust the carbs...the service manual made it easy...

It looks good to me, but there's no way to know for sure unless I could thumb through it....Reading the item description, I'd go for it....

Retired: the engine isn’t seized. It does have a bad starter solenoid though. I was able to jump 12v to the starter and crank the engine. I tested compression on all 3 cylinders and had over 130 psi on each. Plus I was able to jump 1/2” gap during spark check. The entire reason for this thread is so I can get the engine and Parts manual so I get the exact starter solenoid for the engine. I did find a PDF of a manual (I’ll try to link it here and maybe you could check it out to see if I have the right one for my engine). Thanks again for all the info/help

Here isn’t the link/PDF I found. Hopefully it works

All I got when I clicked the link was a blank screen...I wasted a couple/few months of my time trying to garner "free" information on the web (most of it was wrong)...the good news is that you have really good compression and it appears you're pretty savvy with engines....I'm pretty fair myself, but I think I'd still be working on it if I hadn't had the factory service manual....

I'll also say up front that I thought I was smart enough to circumvent some of the steps in "tuning" my motor and it wasn't until I made my SECOND "maiden voyage", that the specific steps listed in the manual made sense...
