Boat Lift Cable Lubricant

We are owners of a new lake home with (old) boat lift. Want to keep the cables well maintained. Aside from the spray on wd-40 or specific cable sprays...anyone have any good lubricants and application methods they recommend?
ie...ball bearing oil and a paint brush?

Downside of the spray lube is the overspray...either in the water or all over our tritoon.

Thanks for comments.

I do nothing to lube cables. I can shoot black bearing grease in the bearings, however. Cables last a long, long time on lifts if kept out of the rain/weather.
