Steering question

#1 Post by bansil » Tue May 01, 2018 5:52 am

So it literally is like steering a duece with no power steering while sitting in a paved parking lot :punchballs

So how hard is your boat to steer? 2 hands on small wheel sucks

I got to looking last night and I think I found some parts of the problem, the PO made too sharp of a turn behind gas tank, and then under the boat it goes side to side 4 times and the cable is tightly zip tide to cross members and final thing? going up through the floor it is under way to much stress

Looks like I need to move helm a few inches towards the middle and reroute the cable, all grease fittings have been hit that I could find

I kind of want a big spoked wheel also :thumbsup

If I were you I'd get a correct size cable instead sounds like that one is too long. Mine has a foot of slack and that's it. "and then under the boat it goes side to side 4 times" crazy!

When replacing the steering system on your pontoon boat you will need the following measurements to determine the cable length.

A. Measure from the center of your pontoon's console to the edge of the starboard side of your deck.

B. Measure your pontoon boat's deck length from the center of your console to the point where your engine is attached to the transom.

C. Measure from the starboard edge of your deck to the center of your transom.

Add A,B, C + 12", round up to the closest foot and that's the length you need.

I feel your pain.... :biggrin2 ...the motor that came with my old pontoon, looked like 50 different Okies had tinkered with it in a vain attempt at getting it to run properly, instead of getting a service manual and doing things right....kind of like "Hold My Beer While I Try This".....

I would get a correctly sized cable at this point. That one likely has wear points that increase the resistance.
