Smelly Dog
After hours of swimming, playing in the mud, and rolling in things I would rather not think about, my dog STINKS. Two days after giving her a bath she smells like a beached whale again. Anyone have a dog shampoo that will beat the Illinois River Stink?

Re: Smelly Dog
Maybe you could let her fight a skunk.
Seriously, would tomato juice help with that smell also?

Re: Smelly Dog
What about all those shampoos & body washes hunters use to eliminate body scent? I bought a bottle of Remington scent-removing wash years ago based on an article that claimed it was even great at removing skunk smell from a dog. Fortunately I've never needed it.

After my dog got skunked in the back yard, I tried the previously mentioned bath in tomato juice. Did not make a difference at all. The next morning took her to PetCo and they performed deskunking, an actual service. They utilized "Natures Miracle Skunk Odor Remover". It actually works. We purchased a couple of bottles to keep at the house just in case. The bottle says its good for all odors on pets and also furniture, floors, pet beds, etc. Just my two cents.

Re: Smelly Dog
This it what we use per our vet to remove skunk odor that might work for you. The Humane Society also recommends a very similar formula.
16 oz of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
¼ c of Baking Soda
1 teaspoon of liquid soap (Dawn dish soap is recommended)
Mix ingredients together and apply. Let the solution stand for 5 – 10 minutes, then rinse the dog well with warm water and towel dry thoroughly.

Re: Smelly Dog
"Towel dry thoroughly" I think is the key for my dog. If I don't get her almost completely dry she will smell.
BTW, my yellow lab loves mud more than a pig. The darker and smellier the better.

Re: Smelly Dog
Years ago I had a smelly mutt that had a similar problem with a less than ideal "bouquet". We tried different shampoo, home made concoctions, etc. and nothing seemed to work. I happened to mention it to a vet friend of mine and he had a simple answer. RINSE!
He said that most of the time the recurring odor is because it was never removed in the first place. I tried to tell him that we always made sure we rinsed our pooch very thoroughly after a bath, but he gave me a simple procedure to follow:
1) After a thorough shampoo rinse the dog very thoroughly until you're sure all of the soap is gone.
2) Rinse the dog just as thorougly again.
3) Rinse a third time, even more thorougly than the first two times.
I really thought the doc was crazy and his idea was overkill and wouldn't make a difference, but I tried it. As long as I did all three steps, and didn't shortcut any of them, it worked and our pooch stayed odor free for a long time. If I truncated even one of the rinses, he stuck again before we know it.

Re: Smelly Dog
If you get the dog clean, getting it to smell good is as simple as Crazy Dog Grooming Spray.

Got her smelling better just using Dawn. Then she did this. Next time I'll take the parrot instead.

Re: Smelly Dog
It sounds like you might be dealing with a smelly dog, which is a common issue that can have various causes, such as skin conditions, ear infections, dental problems, or simply a need for regular grooming. Addressing the underlying cause through proper veterinary care, grooming, and hygiene practices can often help improve the situation.
As far as in-home euthanasia Fort Collins is concerned with a smelly dog concern, it's important to clarify that a smelly dog doesn't typically imply a need for euthanasia. Smelliness in dogs is usually a manageable issue that can be resolved with proper care and attention.

Where does she smell, ass, mouth, ears? Those are usually infections.
Ours drove us crazy. A day after a bath she stunk again. Neck area.
After ten freakin baths found she was rolling in something in the yard every time she went out.

Both my Norwegian Elkhounds would roll in whatever stinky crap they could find. Some dogs do this because of a natural hunting instinct to cover their own scent with something else.
Mine preferred dead fish along the river bank or deer poop. Either way, they would roll in that and just be so "Aren't you so proud of me now?"
Loved them anyways.

Re: Smelly Dog
I think the smell now may be due to the dog in the original post being dead.
