Well, we went up to Crystal River Friday PM to pick up the boat. About the time we finished up all the paperwork, they brought the boat back from it’s test drive. It ran great, but the powered Bimini motor on the port side wouldn’t go down. They tried a different switch and a different wire. It’d work OK with a battery connected to the motor; so the motor’s OK. Whenever they try to use the switch (original or new) it’d trip the circuit breaker. When they bypassed the breaker; it toasted a 20 amp fuse.

So; the boat’s still there, and not at our dock. They’re going to start cutting off rivets to be able to access the area under the port Bimini motor, and start sorting things out from there. I’m no electrician, but it sounds like a short in the wire to me.

I hope they get it all sorted Monday, and I can pick it up Tuesday AM.

I'm sure it was frustrating to not be able to take it home, but you and the dealer did the right thing by doing a sea trial at delivery. Not taking delivery along with a promise to fix it later was also the correct decision. There's way too may posts here about people that either didn't do a sea trial at delivery, or who had poor luck geting promised service after the fact.

Hang in there a bit longer and the small delay will quickly be forgotten once you're out on the water!

I talked to the sales guy this AM, and they’d found and corrected the problem.
One of the wires going to the Bimini motor had a couple of strands loose that were contacting a screw head. when the top was going up; no problem, but when the switch was pushed the other way for the top to go down; the polarity changed, that wire became “hot,” shorting it out, and tripping the breaker.

I had band practice this afternoon, so when the guy asked if I could pick the boat up around 2:PM so they could have time to get it detailed; I told him that I had a conflict, and would pick it up Tuesday morning. I asked him not to tell the shop guys that I wasn’t picking it up today, so they wouldn't let things slide, thinking they had another day, and I’d be waiting around again tomorrow. He said “no way; I’m telling them that you’ll be here at three this afternoon!”

So; we’ll pick it up about 9:30 Tuesday morning.

After riding down the Weeki Wachee river to the Gulf this afternoon, the engine break in time had increased to the point where I could run it between 4000-5000 RPM. At 5K it comes up at a 45 degree angle and is literally planing within 1/2 of the boat’s length. It cruises at 30-32 MPH at 4000 RPMs, which is where I run my boats most of the time. The folks at the dealers said it should top out right at 50 MPH, but I rarely if ever run a boat (or anything else) wide open.

It’s currently running with an aluminum prop, because the stainless one I’m supposed to have is on back order. In my experience, they perform better with stainless props, but if you ever hit anything solid; an aluminum one will tear up more, causing less (if any) lower unit damage. A stainless prop can chew up some stuff without much prop damage, but a serious hit on a stainless prop witl usually result is serious lower unit damage, and can even break the drive shaft.

When the stainless one comes in, I plan on buying this aluminum one for a spare, and to change out to if we decide to go exploring in skinny water.

We headed out for a little ride this afternoon, and I ran it out to the end of the bayport channel, which is right at four miles offshore. The wind was coming out of the north pretty good (there were whitecaps), and my heading was about due NW. I was running 25-26 MPH on the GPS at 3800 RPMs, and the ride was perfectly dry; no spray even on the seat backs, bow or stern. I was really happy to see that this boat runs dry, as it’s a real pain when coming back after a long day trip when the wind and waves have picked up, and having to quarter around trying to keep the spray from soaking everyone.

I punched it briefly when coming back in to swing wide around a boat that was a bit too small for the conditions and just bouncing up and down. I wanted to get back over ahead of a much larger boat coming out. It took off like we’d been standing still, and was up to 43 MPH in no time, with plenty left over.

It’ll be interesting to see what this thing’ll top out at. The torque (and hole-shot) on these new design Hondas is unlike anything I’ve seen before, and I‘ve had some pretty decent outboards.
